Fashion Over Forty (It's a thing)

Updated: Mar 1, 2020

Dare I say it? Is it even a thing? Yah, I'd say so...I mean, it's not the end-all, be-all (well that statement ages me, doesn't it?) but it is something that matters to me. I enjoy fashion. I enjoy shopping,

I love seeing a great outfit come together and I love seeing how looking good, makes me (or you!) feel good. And, btw, I don't think you have to spend a crap ton of money to be "in fashion". I don't think everything

has to be designer to look great and make a statement. I do think that every day is a choice. A choice to get up, wash yo' face, and put something on...now, some days its yoga pants and a dirty tank top (I have one of those days every week!)

But most days, it's about finding something

to put on that says "I'm here for it!" "I feel good, look good, am good!"

So, is there something different about dressing in your 40's vs your 20's or 30's? Yes, honey...there is.

It doesn't mean you can't wear trendy pieces - there is a place for trends in everyone's wardrobe! It's about using discretion, and wisdom when putting those pieces into your every day wardrobe that set you apart from your 20 year old niece.

On the flip side, it doesn't mean because you're 45, that you have to dress like your grandma. I cringe when I see women my age wearing an illfitting pantsuit and sensible shoes (just kidding, wear the sensible shoes if you have to!)

I've received a few complaints that there isn't a lot out there for the 40-50 year old woman who likes to dress stylish - so here are my top 5 tips to putting together the perfect wardrobe!

1) You aren't going to find the perfect wardrobe at one store.

Gasp! No, seriously...walk your booty right out of Loft and take a minute to breath. Yes, you'll find your dress pants there and maybe a cute blouse, but to put together an entire

wardrobe from one store that "caters' to women of a certain age? You'll only end up frustrated and looking like Gladys (no offense Gladys!)

Grab the pants you like from Loft and walk (or go online) on over to a trendy store (my favorite online boutique is Vici) and find a really cute top that speaks to you - something in Leopard! Then find that cute pair of kitten heels from Nordstrom that have been calling your name and whala! Outfit in the works!

2) Tailor it!

Ill fitting clothes (at any age) are a no-go. As we age especially, things just don't fit like they used to. You might be in between sizes - so take that piece in and have someone fit it to you! If you settle for something baggy

or too short/long you won't look good or feel good!

3) Don't go overboard.

Please. You can't go wrong with taking a classic piece and pairing it with a trendy piece).I recently picked up some cropped denim that have the little flair at the bottom... I like to pair these with a classic button down blouse or plain white t and either some flats or basic pumps. What I don't do? Take that pair of trendy denim and rock a leopard t shirt and stilletos. No no honey...no no.

and hey, bTW - a trendy piece doesn't have to be a big ticket item. It can be as small as a pair of earrings or a scarf.

4) Don't spend big money on those trendy pieces- you'll end up regretting it.

Let the pieces that will carry you through the season/years pick your wallet.

5) Have fun! Be creative! Smile!

I'd love to see pictures of how you incorporate some of my tips into your wardrobe planning! And if you have other tips you'd like to share, let's hear 'em!
